Rehabilitation & Recovery Centre
Recovery after ACL reconstruction is a progressive process that involves restoring movement, strength and knee control before returning to increasingly demanding activities.
Rehabilitation and recovery milestones vary between patients, particularly when additional meniscus or cartilage procedures have been performed.
What is the ACL reconstruction recovery timeline?
ACL reconstruction recovery often takes many months. You may resume everyday activities well before your knee is ready for unrestricted pivoting or competitive sport.
Recovery generally progresses through:
- Early pain and swelling management
- Restoration of knee movement and walking
- Progressive strength development
- Running and impact preparation
- Jumping, landing and agility
- Sport-specific rehabilitation
Progression should consider knee symptoms, strength, movement control and functional milestones rather than time alone.
For a detailed stage-by-stage guide, see ACL Reconstruction Recovery Timeline.
What does ACL rehabilitation involve?
Rehabilitation is essential because surgery alone does not restore muscle strength, coordination, or sporting ability.
Early rehabilitation focuses on restoring knee movement, activating the quadriceps and improving walking.
Later stages develop lower-limb strength, balance, neuromuscular control, running, jumping and sport-specific movements where appropriate.
